When I reflect on founding Diversity & Inclusion Matters, my late nan, Eutis-May, is and will always be, at the heart of everything it represents.
She wasn’t just my grandmother; she was my best friend, my mentor, and the cornerstone of my current values.
Her wisdom didn’t just shape who I am—it directly inspires our mission to create care that’s inclusive, compassionate, and culturally sensitive.
Here are the five most important lessons my nan taught me and how they’ve influenced Diversity & Inclusion Matters.
1. Patience
Patience was my nan’s quiet superpower. She faced life’s challenges with grace and resilience, even when the care system fell short in meeting her cultural needs. Watching her navigate these difficulties taught me the value of being patient—not just with people, but with the systems we rely on.
At Diversity & Inclusion Matters, patience is a guiding principle. We take the time to understand cultural differences and tailor care plans to individual needs. Whether listening to concerns or adapting to residents’ preferences, patience ensures everyone feels valued and heard.
2. Love
For my nan, love wasn’t just a feeling—it was action. She showed her love by prioritising others, whether it was her family or her community.
This same love drives everything we do. Diversity & Inclusion Matters isn’t just a care home—it’s a community built on compassion.
Through culturally sensitive care, we ensure every resident feels seen, loved, and cared for, just like my nan always made me feel.
3. Understanding
My nan believed in listening deeply. She often said, “Listen to understand, not just to reply.” Her ability to connect with people from all walks of life profoundly shaped my approach to inclusion.
At Diversity & Inclusion Matters, understanding is at the core of our work. We tailor care to meet each resident’s cultural, spiritual, and personal needs, from dietary preferences to religious practices. By truly understanding those we care for, we create an environment where everyone feels accepted and respected.
4. Faith and Trust in God
My nan’s faith was unwavering. She’d remind me, “Child, trust God to guide you when the path isn’t clear.” This strength of faith gave her peace and gave me the courage to take bold steps, like starting this business.
Faith is definitely an integral part of many people’s lives, and we honour that at Diversity & Inclusion Matters. We provide spaces for prayer, chaplain services, and celebrate diverse religious holidays, ensuring every resident has the opportunity to connect with their spirituality.
5. Kindness
Kindness was the epitome of my nan’s language. She taught me that even small acts—a meal shared, a comforting word—could have a profound impact.
Kindness is the foundation of Diversity & Inclusion Matters. From our staff training to everyday interactions, we prioritise creating an environment where kindness is second nature. It connects our staff, residents, and community, fostering a culture of care and warmth.
A Legacy of Inclusion
My nan taught me everything that truly mattered about life—except how to live without her. But her lessons continue to guide me every day.
In a way, Diversity & Inclusion Matters is her legacy. It’s a place where patience, love, understanding, faith, and kindness come together to create truly transformative care.
By championing cultural sensitivity and inclusion, we’re building more than a care home—we’re building a community where diversity is celebrated and every individual is uplifted.
At Diversity & Inclusion Matters, we honour my nan’s vision by ensuring that no one feels unseen, unheard, or uncared for.
